Matt Damon’s Right Balance

by Lisa on Mar.03, 2011, under Actor

Matt Damon

Matt Damon would never put work before his family

The 40-year-old actor – who raises 12-year-old stepdaughter Alexia and daughters Isabella, four, Gia, two, and four-month-old Stella with spouse Luciana – believes it is possible to strike the right balance between personal and professional commitments.

He said: “I try to have my cake and eat it. On the one hand, I’m most excited and alive when I’m working on something I love. But not to the detriment of my family.

“Clint Eastwood will shoot a 10-hour day, which is the regular hours parents go to work. It’s a great creative experience and then I’m home with my kids.”

Matt – who has been directed by Clint in ‘Hereafter’ and ‘Invictus’ – also revealed he takes longer to prepare for movie roles these days because he hates having to diet beforehand.

He explained to Britain’s Glamour magazine: “I exercise better than I used to. I have trouble cutting out all the food I like, so I start getting ready for movies by preparing earlier.

“I could eat a 10-course meal every night if you let me.”

Prestigious Medal From Harvard Foundation — Shakira

by Kavy on Feb.17, 2011, under Artist, Singer

Shakira HonouredShakira has been named the Harvard Foundation’s 2011 Artist of the Year.

The Columbian singer will receive “the Foundation’s most prestigious medal” in recognition of her music and charity work at the annual Cultural Rhythms festival which is held at Sanders Theatre on the grounds of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on February 26.

Acknowledging the world’s most celebrated artists, scientists and leaders for their humanitarian efforts, the initiative is the college’s centre for intercultural arts and sciences.

The foundation’s director S. Allen Counter said Shakira had been chosen to receive the accolade this year because of her musical contributions to culture and her work helping children in impoverished areas such as Haiti.

He said: “The students and faculty of the Harvard Foundation are honoured to present multi-platinum artist Shakira with the 2011 Artist of the Year award. Her contributions to music and distinguished history of creativity have been applauded by people throughout the world, and she is greatly admired worldwide for her humanitarian efforts through her Barefoot Foundation.”

The ‘Hips Don’t Lie‘ hitmaker – who has sold 50 million albums worldwide – started the Barefoot Foundation when she was just 18 and has opened six schools through it.

The charity’s goal is to ensure that every child has the basic right to a quality education.

Shakira has also been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2003.

Previous recipients of the Harvard Foundation’s Artist of the Year award include Sharon Stone, Will Smith, Matt Damon and Salma Hayek.

Kiss & Laugh — Emily Blunt

by Lisa on Feb.07, 2011, under Actor, Actress

Emily Blunt Kissing Matt DamonEmily Blunt laughed when she had to kiss Matt Damon

The 27-year-old actress had to get up-close with Matt in new movie ‘The Adjustment Bureau’, and admits it wasn’t easy because she kept on giggling about it.

She said: “She said: “It comes with the job. By the time Matt and I had become friends and I had got to know his wife Lucy, I laughed the whole time, because it’s so embarrassing to kiss somebody who is your friend.”

The British beauty famously dropped weight to play the role of a nasty secretary in romantic comedy ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ and had to do it again for the movie, although she found it hard because she is such a food fan.

She told Style: “I love to cook and I love to eat. I make a great Thai green curry and a great roast chicken.

“I do it all the time. Obsessively. It relaxes me and I get zenned out. I go into a meditative state and I don’t want anyone helping me.”

“When I did ‘The Adjustment Bureau’ last year, I had to get really thin again and it was hell. I had to get ripped at the gym.”

Matt Damon — Life & Death

by Alice on Jan.22, 2011, under Actor, updates

Matt Damon -- Life & DeathMatt Damon thinks that psychics are “charlatans”

The 40-year-old actor – who plays a psychic who can see dead people in his latest film ‘Hereafter

didn’t even visit any real-life mystics to research his part for fear of falling down a “rabbit hole” of pretence.

He said: “Had I found a good one I would have. What I was worried about was that it was just going to take me down this rabbit hole of charlatans. I think a large part of that space is occupied by pretenders, which is not to say there aren’t people out there who are genuinely touched in some way. I just didn’t get a chance to meet any of them.”

However, Matt is open-minded to the idea of near-death experiences – after actor Martin Sheen told him about his own almost-fatal heart attack when he was working on the set of ‘Apocalypse Now‘.

He continued: “But I did speak to Martin Sheen, who had a near-death experience on ‘Apocalypse Now’ when he had a heart attack. He told me his incredible story one day when we were working on ‘The Departed‘ together.

“It’s a very well catalogued experience that a lot of people have had. One person I read was legally dead for 28 minutes, which I think is the record.”

Matt also admitted his discussions have made him less afraid of death.

He said: “It’s interesting. I assume most people are afraid of death, but the people who have had these experiences aren’t. That seems to be one of the things they have in common – that they don’t have any fear of it any more.”

What’s Boring 4 Matt Damon?

by Alice on Jan.09, 2011, under Actor, Entertainment

What's Boring 4 Matt Damon?

Matt Damon invented an alter ego so he could keep his life private

The 40-year-old actor – who has four-year-old Isabella, two-year-old Gia, and three-month old Stella with wife Luisiana, as well as raising her 11-year-old daughter Alexia from a previous marriage – was advised by then-girlfriend Minnie Driver to make people think he was bland and quiet when he first shot to fame, in a bid to reduce interest in him.

He admitted: “Whenever I did interviews, I pretended to be this other guy, Mike Smiley. So this f***ing boring, smiley guy Mike would turn up and do my interviews for me, which let me get on with my life.”

Though Matt is much more relaxed about interest in his life now, he is relieved he doesn’t attract the level of attention that other stars do, such as his ‘The Good Shepherd’ co-star Angelina Jolie.

He recalled to FHM magazine: “You always knew which days Angelina was working because there were 40 cameras outside. Eventually they moved her trailed to keep her away from the paparazzi.

“But when I’d walk back and forth, the paps were like lions that had already been fed – so they’d just look at me. Maybe there’d be one camera flash as one guy took a picture without really looking.”

Matt Damon’s Maturity

by Lisa on Jan.07, 2011, under Actor

Matt Damon Maturity

Matt Damon is more content with life now than he was 10 years ago

The 40-year-old actor – who has four-year-old Isabella, two-year-old Gia and three-month old Stella with wife Luciana, and is stepfather to her 11-year-old daughter Alexia from a previous marriage – didn’t mind reaching the milestone age recently because he has fulfilled his personal goals.

He said: “It’s a good birthday – because a lot of the bigger questions are answered.

“I’m married with kids, all the things I was worried about at 30 I don’t worry about any more.”

Though Matt is content with his personal life, he still has professional ambitions he wants to achieve – including working with his friend Ben Affleck again.

He told Empire magazine: “You don’t always get to work with the people that you want to. I mean, I haven’t worked with Ben in years and he’s my best friend.”

Matt and Ben shot to fame after co-writing and starring in ‘Good Will Hunting‘ together in 1997.

The movie earned them the Oscar for Best Writing in 1998.

Best Reviews On Films — True Grit

by Kavy on Jan.02, 2011, under Actor, Actress, Entertainment, Films

Matt Damon True GritTrue Grit (2010)

Mattie Ross’ (Hailee Steinfeld) father has been murdered. She wants the man who killed him, Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin) to be shot dead. To do this, she enlists the help of Deputy Marshal Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges).Cogburn is a barely functioning alcoholic, but still mighty good with a gun. He accepts her offer of $100 to hunt down the man who killed her father. He is joined by a Texas Ranger named La Boeuf (Matt Damon). Mattie accompanies them on their hunt, because she doesn’t trust either of them.

The rest of the story is the group’s exploits in attempting to find the man who killed Mattie’s father. That is just about it. There isn’t a twist, there isn’t a lot on the film’s mind, and it’s just a well-told adventure story in a western setting. Since this is a Coen brothers film, that also means that the adventure will be compelling and the characters will be interesting. The movie will also be of high quality, this we can almost be sure of before even viewing it.

True Grit is adapted from the 1968 novel of the same name. The novel had already been made into a film one year later in 1969. That film starred John Wayne, and won him the Academy Award for Best Actor. The Coen brothers have stated that they wanted their film to be more faithful to the novel than the 1969 film, and that they were not just reimagining that film.

Whether or not their claim is true or not is something that is hard to discern. The story doesn’t really have much to alter about it, and the genre is already set in stone. In fact, this is really the first time that the Coen brothers have stuck to their genre so rigorously. They adhere to most of the standards of the Western genre, not pushing any boundaries or taking any risks.

There are only two things that actually make True Grit stand out from the other quality movies that are out nowadays, or the great Westerns that were made years past. The first way is differentiates itself is in the humor that it contains. The way that the Coen brothers have written their adaptation makes it humorous, while keeping a fairly dark tone. There are many funny situations and moments in dialogue, breaking up the dark moments with ones of humor.

The second way that it is different is the fact that it is a Western. There haven’t been many of those lately, so having one come out automatically makes True Grit stand out. The last big Western film to come out was 2007’s 3:10 to Yuma, itself a critical success. Having a lack of competition will certainly help True Grit at the box office.

Also helping it out is the fact that it features great acting performances. Despite the big names included in the cast like Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon, the lead of the film is actually 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld. The story is told from her point of view, and she does a good job of carrying it. Selected from more than 15 000 auditions, Steinfeld won the role. This must have been created some anxiety from the filmmakers, as she hadn’t starred in any large-scale production before. Nonetheless, the risk paid off, and she delivers an impressive performance. Her character is far more mature than many you would expect, being able to negotiate with several businessmen and get her way.

Also great are the performances by Bridges and Damon. While they don’t get as much attention as Steinfeld, they are perfect for their roles. Bridges job as an alcoholic, half-functioning U.S. Marshal is always entertaining, and Damon always seems like he’s having fun, no matter what is happening in the story at the time.

The story mixes a mystery with adventure, finding a good balance between the two. Characters have to look for clues regarding Chaney’s whereabouts. They ride horses everywhere, and engage in shootouts. Characters travel great distances across the Wild West. There is a good sense of adventure that is given, and there is enough action to keep the audience’s attention.

The characters all have depth and they develop throughout True Grit. We are given reason to care about Mattie right away, as her character is one to be empathized with. Her father’s murder gives her motivation. We also end up caring about the other characters, especially that of Cogburn. We want to see him overcome all of his issues by the end of the film. We have that hope throughout, and it helps keep our attention during the slower moments.

True Grit is a good film that will get attention mostly because it is a new Western film, something that there have been few of as of late. It has an interesting story, great acting and the Coen brothers’ unique style of humor. It’s genuinely funny, and stays entertaining throughout. True Grit is a well-made film that may inspire similar films to be made in the near future. It’s a great Western film, something we haven’t had much of lately, and that will allow it to be a success. It’s definitely worth a watch, so give it one.

Colin Firth Is Bringing Britain’s “extraordinary” History?

by Kavy on Sep.14, 2010, under Actor, Entertainment

Colin FirthColin Firth is bringing Britain’s “extraordinary” history to life on stage

The ‘King’s Speech’ actor is to narrate a stage performance and documentary called ‘The People Speak’ – featuring a number of stars, including Sir Ben Kingsley, Sir Ian McKellen and Joss Stone – which will show through readings and music, times when ordinary British citizens spoke out for change.

Speaking about the project, Colin – who will co-direct – explained that one of the reasons he is participating is because he hated history when he was at school and he wants to make people aware of some of the lesser known pivotal moments of his country’s past.

He said: “To me ‘The People Speak’ is the perfect response to the abject misery of my history class as a school boy. Considering the immense riches that history offers us in terms of the best and worst of human behaviour – corruption, sexual deviation, rebellion, struggles for power – none of that made it into my history lessons. There is absolutely no reason why history should be dry.”

The British production was inspired by the 2009 American version which featured a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, Rosario Dawson, Bruce Springsteen, and Viggo Mortensen.

The live performance will take place on Sunday 19 September 2010 at the Prince of Wales Theatre in London’s West End.

Matt Damon Isn’t Bothered About Turning 40

by cyan on Jan.31, 2010, under Actor

Matt Damon

Matt Damon

The ‘Bourne Identity’ actor couldn’t care less about reaching the landmark age in October because he has been told by his ‘Invictus’ co-star Morgan Freeman, 72, it’s the best age to be.
Matt revealed: “I was talking to Morgan and someone said I was about to turn 40 and Morgan said, ‘Are you about to turn 40?’ I said I was and he said, ‘You are just coming into your prime.’ I said, ‘Really?’ And he replied, ‘The 40s are the best decade by far. That’s when things really get good.’ ”
As he gets ready to enter a new decade of his life, Matt – who has two children, Isabella, three, and 16-month-old Gia, with his wife Luciana Bozan, who also has an 11-year-old daughter Alexia from a previous relationship – is hoping to try his hand at directing.
He said: “I can’t wait to direct. The only thing that is stopping me from directing is that I keep getting these great roles.”
‘Invictus’ tells the story of how Nelson Mandela – played by Morgan – and South African rugby captain Francois Pienaar – portrayed by Matt – joined forces to lead the team to an unlikely 1995 World Cup victory over the All Blacks and unify the racially fragmented country following the end of apartheid.

Emily Blunt Plans To Give Up Her Restricted Diet This Christmas

by Kavy on Dec.21, 2009, under Actress

Emily Blunt

The British actress has been looking forward to the festive period for months because she plans to ditch her healthy eating plan and treat herself to some calorific treats.

She said: “I’m going to eat as much as I want and get off this diet I’ve been on!”

Emily has been monitoring her calorie intake for months while filming her latest movie, ‘The Adjustment Bureau’, in which she portrays a slender ballet dancer Elise Sellas.

The 26-year-old actress stars alongside Matt Damon in the sci-fi thriller about an affair between the dancer and a politician, who are kept apart by mysterious forces.

Emily has trained hard to lose weight for the role, and even went to a “dance boot camp” to tone up and pick up dance tips.

She recently said: “I’m going to dance boot camp. I’ll never be at the same standard as a professional, but hopefully I’ll be able to do a little bit. I didn’t do ballet when I was a child. I gave it up in some sort of bratty rage, claiming it hurt my feet.”

‘The Adjustment Bureau’ is due for release next year.

Emily Blunt Admits, She Suffered From The Speech Impediment While Growing Up

by cyan on Nov.25, 2009, under Actress

Emily Blunt

The ‘Young Victoria’ actress suffered from the speech impediment while growing up and admits she used to be reluctant to speak as a teenager.

She said in an interview with New York Times magazine: “Because I couldn’t talk very much, I watched the world go by more closely.”

Rather than let her stutter get the better of her, Emily improved her speech by listening to the different accents of the people in her acting class.

She said: “I’ve always been fascinated by accents, and the way people speak, and the intonations of it, and that was because I found it so hard to speak in my own voice.”

Emily, 26, doesn’t shy away from self-improvement. She went to “dance boot camp” for her role as a ballerina in new movie ‘The Adjustment Bureau’, in which she stars alongside Matt Damon.

She recently said: “I’m going to dance boot camp. I’ll never be at the same standard as a professional, but hopefully I’ll be able to do a little bit.

“I didn’t do ballet when I was a child. I gave it up in some sort of bratty rage, claiming it hurt my feet.”

‘The Adjustment Bureau’, which also stars Anthony Mackie, is a sci-fi thriller which sees Matt’s congressman character thrown into turmoil by the arrival into his life of Emily’s dancer character.

Johnny Depp:The Sexiest Man Alive 2009, Awarded By The US magazine, People

by cyan on Nov.18, 2009, under Actor

Johnny Depp

The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star has been awarded the title by the US magazine People for the second time, after first being given the accolade in 2003. He is the third man to gain the honour twice, matching George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

A spokesperson for the publication said: “At 46, the father of two still reigns as Hollywood’s most irresistible iconoclast; as one-of-a-kind as his beloved 15-year-old boots and as smouldering as his favourite Cuban cigars.

“He has had women swooning since his days as a teen detective on ‘21 Jump Street’.”

Also included on the list are Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Bradley Cooper, David  Beckham, Gilles Marini, Nick Cannon and Chris Daughtry and Robert Downey Jr.

Upon hearing of his inclusion, Chris composed a song which included the lyrics: “Sexiest man alive? / Am I at least Top 5? / I know being bald /won’t get me the cover / I just hope it’s not page twentysomething or other.”

False reports had circulated earlier this week that ‘Twilight’ star Robert Pattinson had been awarded the title.

Hugh Jackman will also be pleased, as earlier this month he told how he was looking forward to passing on the Sexiest Man Alive title he was awarded last year so he could stop taking care of himself.

He said: “The pressure’s off. I can be a slob again. I thought there were thousands of other guys that deserved it, but it’s been a great year.”

Previous stars named Sexiest Man Alive by People include Matt Damon, Matthew McConaughey and Jude Law.
