Courteney Cox worries about getting older and not being a “hot young thing”

The 46-year-old actress – who recently announced a trial separation from her husband David Arquette after 11 years together – has days when she gets “down” on herself about her appearance.

She said: “Sometimes it’s a battle to accept you’re no longer the hot young thing. To realise you don’t attract people in the same way, it can be a bit sad.

“It’s nice to feel sexy, even if it’s only a matter of perception. There are days when I get out of bed and look in the mirror and think I look awful. I get down on myself. But other days I get up and I feel happy.”

Courteney has also played down suggestions she and David will definitely divorce, insisting they both need some time to assess their relationship.

But she is adamant they are both totally committed to raising their six-year-old daughter Coco.

She added in an interview with OK! magazine: “We are trying to get some perspective, we have to take time to work things out for ourselves. I want to be as calm and together as I can be.

“We want to be close and harmonious for Coco. She needs to know we still love her and we still love each other, but right now we can’t all be together the way we were before. We’ve still been having dinner together and making this as easy for her as we can.”

Despite worrying about getting older, Courtney has been given a confidence boost by her role in TV series ‘Cougar Town’ - in which she plays divorcee Jules Cobb who dates younger men.

She said: “The producers have been great putting me in relationships with very handsome younger men. It’s a nice boost to the ego.”

Courteney Cox-Arquette thinks Zac Efron would be a “perfect” boyfriend for an older lady.

The ‘Cougar Town’ actress – who plays Jules Cobb, a woman who dates younger men in the US drama series – believes the ‘High School Musical’ hunk is a prime target for other ‘cougars’, despite thinking he is too “confident” to be seduced.

Asked what defines a ‘cougar’, Courteney – who is married to actor David Arquette – said: “My husband’s seven years younger than me so I must be a cougar older women have more experience.
“Zac Efron would be perfect, but he probably has too much confidence to be real prey for a cougar. You know you’re a cougar when you’re attracted to your son’s friends.”

The 45-year-old star – who has a five-year-old daughter Coco with David – also admitted she is struggling to cope with getting older and constantly worries about her flaws.

She is quoted by Now magazine as saying: “I don’t think ageing is great, I’m not having a ball with it. I’m a pretty self-critical person. If it’s not one thing I’m obsessed with, it’s another. I usually obsess on one thing for a while, then for some reason I don’t notice it anymore.
“But then I’ll go onto something else. I’ve been that way my whole life. I come from a vain family, so this is bound to happen. I’m running that race pretty hard.”

Courteney – who has previously admitted having Botox injections in an attempt to smooth out her wrinkles – hasn’t ruled out plastic surgery in the future.

She added: “It can be great or it can be horrible. I don’t really know if I would do it again. I’m not against plastic surgery or Botox – whatever works. But right now I don’t do Botox, injectibles or anything.”

Jennifer Aniston was “shocked” when Courteney Cox-Arquette flashed her flesh on TV.

The former ‘Friends’ actress was completely surprised when her pal and co-star bared all for her latest drama series ‘Cougar Town’, where she plays a woman who embarks on a series of romances with younger men.

Despite her insecurities, Courteney – who has a five-year-old daughter Coco with her husband David Arquette – wanted to shoot the scenes because she felt it was important to show what real women look like.

She said: “I think it was an important thing to do. This show talks about real things and real experiences, so I think I had to. I know my friend Jennifer Aniston was shocked I did it. Some people may not want to show parts of them that are not the very best and that’s alright. I decided to show, and I don’t care. It was important to show the real side of being 40.”

While she was happy to expose her body on screen including flaws, Courteney tries hard to minimise her imperfections with a strict exercise regime.

She explained: “I try really hard. I walk, I run, I do elliptical, I do band work, weights and dance aerobics. I play tennis and I eat really well… But I was also lit very well. Don’t mistake Hollywood lighting for reality!”

The actress – who plays maneater Jules Cobb in US drama ‘Cougar Town’ – didn’t mind shooting semi-nude scenes for the show but admits she doesn’t have the “discipline” to lose weight.

When asked if she embarked on a dieting regime before filming, she said: “I avoided salt the night before but no, I’m not that disciplined. I can’t be – I’m too hungry all the time. I just had to suck it in a little tighter! I was OK flashing some flesh. I think it’s great that the show portrays the reality of what it’s like to be in your 40s. It’s a great time of life.”

While she refuses to diet, the 45-year-old star – who has a five-year-old daughter Coco with husband David Arquette – ensures she exercises regularly as she no longer finds it easy to stay slim since quitting smoking.

She added to Look magazine: “Well, first of all, I never exercised during ‘Friends’ – I just smoked loads of cigarettes. Now I eat and exercise, and you know, do everything I can… I just try a lot harder than I used to.”

Lisa – who played Pheobe Buffay in ‘Friends’ alongside Courteney’s Monica Geller – stars as a mean dermatologist in the series who treats Courteney’s character Jules.

‘Cougar Town’ executive producer Bill Lawrence said: “They didn’t want to play friends.

“Lisa plays a dermatologist who is a horrible, horrible person, but Courteney goes to her because she’s the best.

“The sight of them playing people who dislike each other intensely was very funny for me to watch.”

Lisa’s character Dr Amy Evans has a reputation as one of the best doctors in town with a very harsh manner.

The cameo scene sees Dr Evans inject Jules with Botox after prodding and pulling her face.

‘Cougar Town’ follows the story of Jules, a recently divorced 40-something who is looking for some excitement in her life.

Production on US comedy drama series ‘Cougar Town’ has been suspended to give the 45-year-old actress – who has a five-year-old daughter Coco with husband David Arquette – time off to deal with a personal problem.

Show representatives have so far refused to give out any further details.

A spokesperson for TV network ABC said: “We can confirm production on ‘Cougar Town’ has been temporarily shut down in order for Courteney to deal with a private family matter.”

Courteney stars as single mother Jules Cobb on the show and is also executive producer.

Courteney recently admitted she and David, 38, want to have more children before it is too late.

She said: “We’re not trying yet. We’re revving up the engines. I’m only ready because time’s a-ticking.

“If I was 34, I’d wait another year. I want Coco to be helping me with the next one. One child is hard. Two is probably harder.”

The actress, who played ditzy blonde Phoebe Buffay in the hit US series, will guest star on Courteney’s new TV show ‘Cougar Town’ early next year.

Courteney, 45, told website TVMagazine.com: “She’ll play a dermatologist that my character can’t stop going to even though she’s mean to me. She is the best in town and I get addicted.”

Courteney, who plays a newly-single mother in her 40s in the programme, would also love to get her other friend Jennifer Aniston a guest spot.

She said: “She’s younger than me so she can’t play my contemporary even though she did on ‘Friends’, but I think we can find something great for her to play.”

The pair shared a steamy kiss when Jennifer, 40, made a cameo on Courteney’s tabloid drama ‘Dirt’ in 2007.

The brunette beauty also revealed she asked Matthew Perry, who played her on-screen husband Chandler Bing in ‘Friends’, to play her love interest in ‘Cougar Town’.

Courteney – who played cleaning obsessive Monica Geller – said: “I did ask Matthew if he’d play my boyfriend on the show. But he thought it was a little too much after Chandler and Monica.”
