Claire Danes Talks About Her College Days

by cyan on Jan.17, 2011, under Actress

Claire Danes regrets not finishing college. Claire Danes

The 31-year-old actress – who shot to fame as a teenager in TV show ‘My So-Called Life’ took a break from acting in 1998 to study psychology at the prestigious Yale University but quit after two years.

When asked what advice she would give her younger self, Claire said: “Go to college, actually. I didn’t finish. I only went for two years but those two years were really good for me to just step away for a little bit and grow up without the prying eyes of the public and all the judgment that accompanies it. So that was good, and I don’t know.”

Claire – who won the Golden Globe award for Best Actress in a TV movie for ‘Temple Grandin’ last night (16.01.11) – has previously revealed she took time out from Hollywood to attend college in order to regain a “normal” life.

She explained: “I started working when I was very young. I got an agent when I was 12 and fortunately was employed consistently from that point on. So I didn’t really go to a conventional high school. I was tutored on sets and things.”

The actress – who is married to British actor Hugh Dancy – is not the only actress to take time out of her career to attend university.

Natalie Portman completely a degree in psychology at Harvard , while ‘Harry Potter’ star Emma Watson is currently studying English Literature at Brown University.

Oprah — @ Kennedy Centre Honours 2010

by Abbey on Dec.06, 2010, under Award, TV

Oprah Winfrey received an award at the 33rd Kennedy Centre Honours last night (06.12.10)

The chat show host was one of five celebrities – along with Sir Paul McCartney, country singer Merle Haggard, Broadway composer Jerry Herman and dancer Bill T. Jones – honoured at the event held at the White House in Washington DC.

Oprah – who was accompanied by her long-term partner Stedman Grahan - and Paul held hands on stage as US President Barack Obama addressed the crowd, saying the recipients had “given the nation the extraordinary gift of the arts”.

He added: “Although the honourees on this stage each possess a staggering amount of talent, the truth is, they aren’t being recognised tonight simply because of their careers as great lyricists or songwriters or dancers or entertainers.

“Instead, they’re being honoured for their unique ability to bring us closer together and to capture something larger about who we are – not just as Americans, but as human beings.”

No Doubt performed the Beatles’ track ‘Hello, Goodbye’ while stars such as Julia Roberts, Claire Danes, Steven Tyler, Angela Lansbury and Sidney Poitier attended the star-studded evening.

After Oprah received the award at the Kennedy Centre Honours, comedian Chris Rock joked “No one deserves this award more than Oprah Winfrey, but no one needs it less.”

Claire got her start as a guest star on Law and Order in an episode called “Skin Deep”. Claire Danes Thinks She’s Lucky To Have An Actor Husband

by cyan on Feb.04, 2010, under Husband

Claire Danes

Claire Danes

The American actress – who met British spouse Hugh Dancy, 34, when filming the 2007 drama ‘Evening’ – said being in the same profession means the couple can pass on tips, especially when one of them is due to start work on a particularly challenging role.

She said: “He did play an autistic person six months prior to my doing ‘Temple Grandin’, which was a really odd coincidence. And it was very convenient for me, because our bookshelves were already stacked with all of the required reading. It was a great gift to have him understand what I was doing in such an intimate way.”

The 30-year-old star – who plays the title role of autistic author and animal behaviour expert Temple Grandin in her new film – said she was so desperate to get the part just right because the writer is still alive and she didn’t want to “disappoint” her.

She explained to the USA Today newspaper: “I read some of her books and started exploring who she was and became enraptured. It was totally daunting, because she’s wired and organized in such a fundamentally different way from myself. She’s alive and would ultimately see it, and I didn’t want to disappoint her.”

Claire spent an afternoon with the author as part of her research and was delighted to gain her approval.

She said: “She really liked it, which is a profound relief. She was the only critic I cared about. Once I had her validation and her appreciation, I felt very, very good.”

Claire Danes Thinks Everyone Should Get Married And Be Happy

by Alice on Dec.04, 2009, under Actress, Marriage

Claire Danes

The actress – who wed her ‘Evening’ co-star Hugh Dancy at a secret ceremony in France in September – is content with her relationship and believes other people should tie the knot in order to be as happy as she is.

She said: “It feels wonderful. I’m recommending marriage. It’s still very new but there’s a kind of deep security that I’m really enjoying. My parents have been happily married since they were 21, so I have been lucky to have them as a model.”

The 30-year-old actress is currently starring in ‘Me and Orson Welles’ alongside Zac Efron, where she plays career-hungry production assistant Sonja Jones, and admits she was in awe of the opinionated character.

She said: “I admire her focus and her determination to succeed. I think it’s very brave for a woman to be so honest about wanting to do well and being hungry for success in any era, but especially then when women have few choices.”

While being in awe of her on-stage persona’s drive, Claire has started enjoying life more as she’s got older.

She explained: “I’m happier than ever. I have a deeper understanding of who I am and I’m more comfortable in myself. I know my needs and I know how they can be met. I hope that trend continues.

“But it’s still a bit of a shock when I’m at the gym on the treadmill and I have to punch in my information and I go, ‘Oh God, I’m 30’. It feels very old, but I like adulthood a lot.”
